A positive spin on the Pistons season

In a season that has been filled with so much negativity and uncertainty it has been hard for the Detroit Pistons to find much positive energy.

The power struggle between Richard Hamilton and the organization has been strenuous on the delicate balance that a team must possess, and the fact that the team itself is in the limbo of an ownership change does not help the cause.

It’s often times so easy to look back upon the glory years of the “going to work” Pistons and compare them to this era of Piston basketball, but to be honest it’s a horribly unfair comparison.

The 2004 Pistons make this team look bad in the way that Jessica Alba makes your girlfriend look bad.

You love your girlfriend I’m sure, but come ‘on…it’s Jessica Alba! She’s smoking hot!

Now, naturally as a person and as a sports writer I tend to be negative, cynical, and overly critical of things. Specifically when I look at sports it is easier for me to go through and point out things that I would change instead of highlight positives that don’t necessarily bring about a lot of talking points.

It’s the nature of the beast, but right now with the Detroit Pistons it’s like brutally beating and torturing a dead horse.

The horse is already dead thus it won’t feel the pain, and instead you will just end up feeling worse yourself, and looking like a jerk.

So it is in that spirit that I bring to you this positive article about the Detroit Pistons.

The truth about the Pistons is that things aren’t just as bleak as we feel they might be right now. Sure, they have lost a lot of games this season and the overall product has fallen dramatically since the Championship in ’04, but if you look really close there are a few positives that you can pull from this team.

This team has a future, and instead of dwelling on the ugly present I think that it’s time we start looking ahead into the future.
The Pistons have a young core of solid and talented players.

Austin Daye is starting to show some signs of the talent that was talked about when he was drafted, and Greg Monroe is on the All-Star weekend rookie team!

One could only assume that Jonas Jerebko will come back to the team next year ready to resume the impressive play that he started in his first season, and putting him in the mix with Daye and Monroe could really boost the overall effectiveness of this young core.

Not only that, but you have to factor in that Greg Monroe is pretty much coming into his own. Literally it seems like every time I watch him play he is getting more confident in his abilities around the basket, and he is practically a double-double machine.
Monroe is only going to get better with time and experience, and if the Pistons get a legitimate big man, than they can slide him over to a more natural power forward position and we can see what he really can do.

I know that things are looking down right now, but if you really look at this team they do have enough young pieces to build a solid foundation.

It really comes down to Joe Dumars making the right decisions and the team being bought.

If Dumars can’t make the right decisions than it’s time to part ways with him. It’s as simple as that.

One last positive note to leave you with: Potential owner, Tom Gores, was at the Palace to watch the Pistons take on the Spurs, and considering that he was seen in Karen Davidson’s suite, things are starting to look up on that end as well.
