It looks like outdoor hockey could be coming to the Detroit area very soon.

According to Ansar Khan of Mlive.com, the Detroit Red Wings are in deep discussions with the NHL about hosting the Winter Classic within the next two seasons. In fact the Wings expect to host the annual event next season or in 2013-14.

Khan writes that the Wings would prefer to have the game at Comerica Park given that it is downtown and the home of the Detroit Tigers who is own by Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch. Of course there is also always the possibility that the Wings host the game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor to accommodate more fans.

Detroit and New York are both reportedly in the running to host the next two Winter Classic games.
