According to ESPN.com’s Chad Ford, new Pistons owner Tom Gores has given team president and general manager Joe Dumars three years to turn the Pistons back into a winner.

Not only has Gores given strong support to Dumars, but he’s also not pressuring Dumars to take shortcuts. Dumars will have the green light to build the team the right way in the next three years.

For the past few seasons Dumars has been handcuffed by an uncertain ownership group that disallowed him to spend money. Unfortunately for Dumars he ended up taking a lot of heat for the moves he did and didn’t make during free agency and through trades.

If Dumars has the full support now of ownership, which it seems like he does, Pistons fans should give Dumars one more chance in turning this team around. Even though he doesn’t have a great track record in terms of the draft (except with Tayshaun and Greg Monroe) he does seem to do well on the free agent market and with trades. The questionable free agent pickups and trades (including the Billups for Iverson trade) were strictly business.
