With their first pick in the 2011 MLB Draft the Tigers have selected Arkansas catcher James McCann out of Arkansas with the 76th overall pick.

This season, McCann posted a .306 average with six HRs and 38 RBI’s. In April, MinorLeageBaseball.com wrote this scouting report on the young Razorbacks’ catcher…

Junior, right-handed hitter, 6-3, 210 pounds. Hitting .297/.396/.484 with four homers, 14 walks, 11 strikeouts in 91 at-bats. Catchers with good gloves and a chance to hit are always in demand, and McCann fits the bill. He’s shown good plate discipline this year and some power despite the switch in the metal bats. I can’t see how his stock has dropped at all, and he could fit into the supplemental round due to positional scarcity. Any sort of late offensive charge could sneak him higher than currently expected.

Despite selecting six catchers in last years draft, signing Victor Martinez to a long-term deal and Alex Avila getting of to a good start this year the Tigers remain relatively thin at the catching position. In last years draft the highest pick the Tigers used at the catching position was 100th overall when they took Rob Brantley. Brantley is currently hitting .308 in low-A.
