For the first time since 1972 the Wings are 5-0 and rolling after their 5-2 win over the reeling Columbus Blue Jackets.

With the power play being a concern early on this season the Wings were able to rattle off 3 power play goals en route to the victory. Johan Franzen had two goals (both on the power play) while Nicklas Lidstrom added his second goal of the season which too came on the power play. Pavel Datsyuk and Valterri Filppula added the other Red Wings tallies. Filppula’s goal came on an empty net after Franzen became tangled up going for the hat trick.

The defense limited Columbus’ chances as Jimmy Howard turned away 32 shots. The Wings as a whole were equally as sharp especially after having a week off.

The Majors Detroit Player of the Game: This one without a doubt goes to Johan Franzen after his 2 goals, 1 assist and 4 shots on goal. After the game Larry Murphy commented that Franzen could be in line to be a 40+ goal scorer this season. If he continues to go to the net like he’s been doing that number may not be so far-fetched.

The Majors Detroit Zero of the Game: The Columbus penalty kill was awful tonight. They did Steve Mason absolutely no favors as they now sit 0-6-1 and the lone winless team in the NHL.

Looking Ahead: The Wings have set themselves up for a very intriguing matchup with the Washington Capitals Saturday night. Could this be an early Stanley Cup preview as both teams head into the matchup undefeated?

The Bottom Line: The Wings played a quality game from top to bottom especially considering they had that long layoff. If the power play for the Wings can continue to click going forward their opponents are going to be in for very long nights.
