Various news sources including Darren Dreger of TSN are reporting that the Detroit Red Wings may be in negotiations to sign former San Jose goaltender Evgeni Nabokov.
This all comes after the uncertainty surrounding the health of the Detroit goaltenders who have come under injury the past few weeks. Starter Jimmy Howard missed some time because of a bruised knee but is scheduled to start Thursday night in St. Louis. Backup and longtime Red Wing Chris Osgood is scheduled to be out until early March as he is recovering from groin surgery and Thomas McCollum recently broke his finger while he was up with the Wings organization backing up Joey MacDonald.
There are however a couple things that could make the Nabokov signing difficult for Detroit. First Nabokov would have to pass through waivers which one would believe that teams ahead of Detroit in the waiver order would be interested in signing Nabokov themselves. Second, the Wings have very limited cap space so they would have to offer Nabokov a cheaper contract then other teams might possibly offer. Then what happens when Osgood and Howard are both healthy, or is there now some doubt about Osgood being ready for the playoffs?
There have been some rumors out there as well that the Wings may be negotiating for teams like Ottawa or the New York Islanders.
Either way stay tuned to The Majors Detroit as this continues to develop.
