Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy made some pretty interesting comments on the Dan Patrick Radio show Friday when it came to the idea of him returning to the NFL as a head coach.

First, according to Dungy the Detroit Lions vacant head coaching job is the best job out there…

“I will tell you this, Dan, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions,” Dungy told Dan Patrick in an interview on The Dan Patrick Show Friday. (DetroitLions.com)

Certainly not something you hear everyday as a Lions fan… but it get’s better when it comes to the unreasonable thinking that surrounds the notion that Dungy would actually return to the NFL coaching realm.

Here we go…

When asked why the Lions is the best coaching job out there in the NFL here’s what he had to say:

“That’s the job I would want. I think they are the closest to the Super Bowl.”

What?! Please elaborate Tony!

“You look for a franchise quarterback in this day and age, you want to have a passing game because this game is all about passing, and you want people who can rush the passer and protect the lead,” he said. “Detroit’s got all that.

“Now you throw in two really good tight ends, a couple running backs who can make things happen. They’ve got everything they need.”

“And you’ve got an owner (in Detroit) who doesn’t meddle,” Dungy said. “He’s not going to come in and tell you, ‘Play this guy, cut this guy, draft this guy.’ It’s a perfect situation. If I was ever coming back, it would be for that job.”

Well there ya go Lions fans, right from Tony Dungy himself. The only problem is Tony Dungy isn’t coming back to deal with the rigors of NFL coaching when he’s got a comfy and pretty lucrative TV job in hand. Not to mention money never seemed to be an issue with Dungy when it came to work.

But when it comes to the other things that Dungy said, the QB, passing game, running backs, etc, he’s right. No matter what any fan thinks, Matthew Stafford is a good QB in the NFL. Obviously he could be better despite the poor performance in 2013, just ask Philip Rivers. Reggie Bush and Joique Bell proved they could be a nice tandem in the league. The passing and rushing yardage between the two I don’t think lie, especially not with Bush. Calvin Johnson speaks for himself and we’ve seen what this pass rush is capable of. It’s just going to take the right head coach with the right attitude.

I guess it wouldn’t hurt to give Mr. Dungy a call though.
