• Could the Tigers pursue Chone Figgins of the Seattle Mariners to fill their third base hole? According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports,  Seattle may be looking to cut their loses on the Figgins who has been a complete non-factor in his two years with the Mariners. Currently Seattle seems to be willing to include cash in any deal involving Figgins who has hit just .236/.309/.285 with 53 steals in 74 chances during his two years in Seattle. In terms of Figgins’ current deal there is $17 million left on his contract, and a $9 million dollar option for 2014 will vest with 600 plate appearances in 2013. Mike Axisa of MLBTradeRumors.com believes that Seattle may have to eat in upwards of $15 million dollars to move Figgins. As of right now the Mariners see the Reds, Giants and Tigers as potential suitors.
  • If the Tigers don’t fill their third base vacancy with a high-priced option they could make the big move at second base. Going back to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Tigers may be interested in acquiring second baseman Martin Prado of the Atlanta Braves who primarily played left field in 2011 after Atlanta obtained Dan Uggla. Morosi adds that the Tigers may be willing to part with outfielder Delmon Young who the Tigers got via trade from Minnesota this past season. The general feeling however is that the Tigers would have to give up more than just Young in order to get Prado who is set to obtain roughly $4.4 million dollars via arbitration in 2012. The 28-year-old second baseman will be under team control through the 2013 season.
  • With second base in mind, it’s my believe that the Tigers may ask the Tigers about the availability of second baseman Michael Young given the fact that it can free up money for Texas to pursue Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder.
  • Jon Paul Morosi mentions via Twitter that the Tigers’ search for a backup catcher is still wide open. Morosi cites sources who say that Jose Molina, Matt Treanor (former Tiger), Gerald Laird (former Tiger) and Ramon Castro are options. I’m sure Tigers fans would be thrilled to see Gerald Laird back in the Tigers uniform…
  • According to Lynn Henning of the Detroit News, the Tigers were never in any serious discussions with Twins free agent reliever Joe Nathan.
