The Tigers officially announced the signing of veteran catcher Wilson Ramos Friday to a one-year, $2 million dollar deal.

The two sides originally came to a deal on Tuesday, however, things weren’t finalized until the 33-year-old Ramos passed a physical.

Ramos is coming off a 2020 season with the Mets where he slashed .239/.297/.387 with 155 plate appearances and should emerge out of spring training as the team’s number one catcher ahead of Grayson Greiner. Ramos also provides an adequate bridge to Jake Rogers who along with Ramos and Greiner is currently on the Tigers’ 40-man roster.

Tigers DFA Sergio Alcantara

Speaking of the 40-man, to make room for Ramos the Tigers DFA’d infielder Sergio Alcantara who originally made his way to Detroit via the J.D. Martinez trade with the Diamondbacks.

Nonetheless, it’s easy to see why the Tigers decided now to pull the plug on Alcantara considering the 24-year-old slashed .256/.340/.318 in Double-A Erie with 2,611 plate appearances. His numbers in the majors are worse albeit with far fewer plate appearances (23) slashing at .143/.217/.381 with just a single home run.
