It finally happened, Alex DeBrincat is a Red Wing.
Sunday, Steve Yzerman finally pulled the trigger acquiring the 25-year-old winger from the Ottawa Senators for a package of players and picks that included 27-year-old Dominik Kubalik, prospect Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round pick, and a fourth-round pick in 2024.
Detroit also signed DeBrincat to a four-year extension with an AAV of $7,875,000 which may be the most surprising and impressive aspect of the deal for Yzerman considering DeBrincat was reportedly looking for an eight-year extension. If Yzerman managed to actually get the DeBrincat camp down to four years that was a MASSIVE win for the Detroit GM. Not to mention too, Yzerman also convinced Ottawa to send him a two-time 40-goal scorer for a conditional first-round pick in which case the condition surrounding that is Yzerman gets to pick which first-round pick he sends to Ottawa.
Detroit now gets a scoring threat on the wing, ironically just a few days after they officially cut ties with Filip Zadina who by all accounts should’ve been that weapon for them. DeBrincat, a Michigan native is coming off a season in which he scored 27 goals with 39 assists in 82 games played for Ottawa. He also has two 40-plus goal seasons in 2018-19 and 2021-22 when he netted 41 goals in each of those campaigns.
