The Los Angeles Angels have a new general manager.

Thursday, Ken Rosenthal reported the Halos were set to hire former Atlanta assistant GM Perry Minasian replacing the recently fired Billy Eppler.

Minasian was apparently one of 20 candidates to interview for the job so the Angels certainly covered plenty of ground when it came to the GM search. Minasian though is yet another rookie GM hire for Angels owner Arte Moreno who had previously rolled the dice on other first-timer general managers including Tony Reagins, Jerry Dipoto, and Eppler. So I’m sure there’s going to be plenty of Halo’s fans out there decrying the move considering the team is now seriously wasting away the prime years of Mike Trout. However, Minasian has been working his way up through the front office ranks across the MLB and certainly isn’t an unknown. Minasian has previously been connected to other GM vacancies from around the League including the Mets before they went with Brodie Van Wagenen back in 2018.

But in any sense Minasian may be coming in at just the right time to help steer the Angels ship in another direction.

Heading into next season, LA will be entering the final season of their 10-year, $240 million dollar deal with Albert Pujols and are nearing the end of a Justin Upton five-year, $105 million dollar contract that’ll pay the veteran outfielder through the 2022 campaign. Minasian, however, will have to navigate through some deals with some key arbitration candidates on the horizon including Shohei Ohtani, David Fletcher, and Griffin Canning.
