Despite getting blown out by unranked Notre Dame on Saturday, Michigan State fans don’t need to panic going forward.
Why?
Because it was an out of conference loss and there’s still the Big Ten schedule to look forward too.
There’s also no question that Michigan State is a good team and with some adjustments they should be back on track going forward.
First off like the play on the field, the play calling from the sidelines could use some improvement and head coach Mark Dantonio knows it. There’s no question that Dantonio made a mistake when he called for another fake field goal before the end of the first half when he was well within field goal range to send the Spartans to halftime with some kind of positive momentum.
Second, the running game needs to improve. The Spartans ran for a net 29 rushing yards on 23 attempts. That’s not good enough for even the weakest opponents and it surely won’t work once the Big Ten schedule rolls around. The good news is the Spartans have backs very capable of having success against just about any other run defense in the Big Ten.
Perhaps the most concerning aspect of the Spartan’s game is their offensive line. They are a very young line that will get better as the season goes on. However in the mean time they’ll continue to hinder the offense in some aspect. Dan Roushar and Mark Dantonio need to keep this in consideration when developing their offensive schemes during the week.
