Detroit
Michigan Stars

In the wake of all the uncertainty surrounding the Michigan Stars and their future in NISA, the league released the following statement ahead of their return to the pitch this Saturday against Detroit City FC.

CHICAGO (May 21, 2021) – Michigan Stars FC returns to play May 22 against Detroit City FC. The red card and four-game suspension of Assistant Coach Remy Tazifor and the one-game suspension of GK Tatenda Mkuruva for behavior during the May 8 post-game altercation with Chattanooga FC will be in effect. All fines incurred by Michigan Stars for the altercation and the failure to play at Cal United on May 16 have been settled.

We are encouraged by Michigan Stars’ stated commitment to the league, and we look forward to an excellent slate of soccer this weekend.

The only thing really worth noting in the entirety of that statement is that assistant coach Remy Tazifor and goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva will both remain suspended for Saturday’s match against DCFC. Otherwise, the portion of the statement referring to the fines, forfeit last weekend against Cal United, and the Stars’ “commitment to the league” remains open-ended. Did NISA and MSFC settle on reduced fines and what will the future of the Stars be after this spring season? Speculation has always been of the Stars jumping to USL whether it be League One or Championship but after the bullshit, they’ve pulled over the past several weeks it seems unlikely any other League would take them at this point.

Nonetheless, it seems the Stars are lucky they’re able to remain in NISA at this point.

This despite the perceived PR hit the league took by allowing the Michigan Stars temper tantrum to go on as long as it did and with it the uncertainty surrounding this weekend’s match against Detroit City.
