Lions beat writer Tom Kowalski recently wrote that Lions fans should be thrilled that current head coach Jim Schwartz isn’t on the hot seat. Among these reasons why fans should feel this way towards a coach who’s had his up’s and downs this season is the uncertainty of the NFL starting on time next season.

Kowalski believes that there is a 99 percent chance that the labor problems for the NFL carry on into the summer meaning that any new coach would not be able to talk to any of his players during the duration of the negotiations. He also points out that this also means that players would not be working out, watching film and interacting with a new coaching staff as well.

Kowalski even see’s problems if a deal is reached in August or beyond, shortening training camp giving teams less time to become acclimated to a new system.

Of course though Kowalski points out, if a deal is signed soon then all of this is null and void. I’ve had my criticisms for Schwartz this season but have never gone as far as to call for his firing. Given the circumstances and condition the team was in when Schwartz took over he should get at least three season to turn this thing around.

Kowalski definitely presents good points to consider especially to those calling for Schwartz’ head.
