Lions

Last weekend the Detroit Free Press ran a report that the Lions would be moving on from Dan Orlovsky as a backup to Matthew Stafford that more so highlighted the lack of news surrounding the Detroit Football Lions because surely who gives a fuck about the their backup quarterback?

Seriously if Matthew Stafford isn’t playing then the Lions may as well mail it in because winning on a week-in, week-out basis isn’t an option.

Anyways, today the Free Press ran another story shedding some light on Orlovsky’s apparent departure which is the Lions opting to use former Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock as the primary backup next season.

Orlovsky said on SiriusXM NFL radio this morning that the Lions told him they’re going “in a different direction” by promoting Rudock to second-string quarterback and letting Orlovsky’s contract expire next month.

In other words, a team looking for its first Super Bowl ring is going with a former Michigan quarterback and sixth-round pick to back up an established starter in his second NFL season.

The seeds in Rudock’s promotion and Orlovsky’s departure were apparently planted in November of last year when the team activated the then third-stringer to the active roster instead of letting him sign with the Chicago Bears. Still though I’m not sure what prompted the Lions to make that move then instead of the beginning of the season when Rudock was clearly a better option for the Lions at backup instead of Dan Orlovsky who in every aspect offered the Lions nothing.

From here it’s unclear where Orlovsky will end up.

Not that it matters other than the sake of conversation. Orlovsky will turn 34 this August and has spent 12 seasons in the NFL, seven of which were with Detroit who originally drafted him out of UConn. What’s remarkable is three other NFL teams not including the Lions thought Dan-O still had a place in the League. Perhaps that’ll be the same mentality from here on out.
