The Tigers announced Monday that they would not offer infielder Will Rhymes a contract for the 2012 season, making him a free agent at 12 midnight Tuesday.

It seems like a regular run of the mill baseball move however is there more to this story than whats on the surface?

During Game 1 of the ALCS against the Texas Rangers, Will Rhymes (who wasn’t on the playoff roster for this series) made a controversial tweet during the game…

“I turned the game off when danny ran for santi, they are the same speed at best,” Rhymes wrote after Tigers manager Jim Leyland used infielder Danny Worth to pinch-run for Ramon Santiago. “Very confused. Ill check the box tomorrow.”

Sour grapes perhaps after Worth ended up replacing Delmon Young on the playoff roster and not Rhymes when Delmon Young went down with an injury.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski however says the tweet had no barring on the teams decision to not offer Rhymes a contract…

“Not at all,” Dombrowski said. “We just do not see him fitting in with our major-league club this season.”
