Free agent Lions defensive end said his agent is currently in talks with the Lions on a new long-term deal that Avril hopes will be done within the next couple of week. This is according to Tim Twentymen of DetroitLions.com.

“We have had a couple talks, it’s in the beginning stages, but my hopes are to get something done with the Lions,” he told Detroitlions.com as he readied for the radio row gauntlet at the Super Bowl “Hopefully it’s done within the next couple weeks. I understand it’s a business and it’s not all about what I would prefer. We weren’t really talking that much prior to the end of the season and now my agent is talking to (president) Tom (Lewand) and (general manager) Martin (Mayhew).”

Avril had a career year in 2011 where he led the team with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles which was second in the league only to Terrell Suggs of the Baltimore Ravens.

Locking up Avril long-term has been said to be one of the offseason goals of GM Martin Mayhew who is also looking to lockout wide receiver Calvin Johnson to a long-term deal as well.
