To many, tonight isnโ€™t just another game between the Detroit Pistons and the Boston Celtics, it is the first meeting since Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva accused Celtics star Kevin Garnett of calling him a โ€˜cancer patientโ€™.
After the November 2 romp of the Pistons, Villanueva posted the following message on his twitter account courtesy of Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Pressโ€ฆ
โ€œKG talks alot of crap, heโ€™s prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him,โ€
The next day, Garnett defended himself with the following statementโ€ฆ
โ€œMy comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact โ€˜You are cancerous to your team and our league,โ€™ โ€ Garnett said. โ€œI would never be insensitive to the brave struggle that cancer patients endure. I have lost loved ones to this deadly disease and have a family member currently undergoing treatment. I would never say anything that distasteful. The game of life is far bigger than the game of basketball.โ€
Villanueva  who has a medical condition called alopecia universalis which results in hair loss, has tried to put the incident behind him indicating that tonightโ€™s game with Boston is just another game.
โ€œIโ€™m not worried about him, man,โ€ Villanueva said after scoring 25 points. โ€œItโ€™s just another game.โ€Iโ€™m just going to go out there and play and not going to worry about it.โ€
According to Ellis, Villanueva doesnโ€™t expect an angry Garnett. I guess weโ€™ll just have to wait and see.
