For the first time in almost two months, Brian Lewerke will start a football game for the Michigan State Spartans.

Mark Dantonio confirmed the news by announcing that his junior QB will get the nod for Michigan State’s matchup against Oregon for Monday’s RedBox Bowl.

Via the Detroit Free Press:

“We wanted to let things take its course through bowl preparation and everything,” Dantonio said Friday during a news conference for the game. “Brian Lewerke will start the game, so he’ll be our starter as we move through. He’s taken all the reps pretty much throughout bowl practices …, so we feel good about that.”

Lewerke – whose been dealing with a shoulder injury for a good chunk of the season – missed the final two games of the Michigan State season after originally suffering the injury during the Spartans’ win over Penn State on October 13th. Lewerke hasn’t seen game action since Michigan State’s 26-6 loss to Ohio State on November 10th.

The shoulder injury had clearly been causing issues for Lewerke as he completed just 36.5 percent of his throws (27 of 74) for 281 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in his final three appearances coming against Michigan, Maryland and Ohio State.
