A bidding war that is.
According to the Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe, the Boston Red Sox may have to contend very much with the Detroit Tigers for free agents Victor Martinez (who played for Boston this past season) and impending free agent outfielder Carl Crawford. Here is an excerpt from the article…

Detroit has apparently decided to keep Brandon Inge and have him play third base, which takes one team out of the mix for Adrian Beltre. However, the Tigers are said to be very interested in Victor Martinez after light hitting Alex Avila did their catching last season.
Then there’s Carl Crawford. The Sox would love to have him and so would the Tigers, who see a Crawford-Austin Jackson combination giving them premier defense in the outfield. The Tigers had Ryan Raburn in left field for most of last season.
Can the Tigers sign V-Mart and Carl Crawford? It’s baseball, teams can do whatever they want. Owner Mike Ilitch hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2006 and he’s 81. The man owns everything in Detroit short of GM.
In the end I still don’t believe that the Tigers are going to be able to acquire Carl Crawford given the contract that he will command and the simple fact that the Tigers still have a lot of positions to fill or consider filling externally this offseason. Like the the article said though, this is baseball and anything can happen, not to mention that Ilitch does want to win and he wants to win now.
Victor Martinez on the other hand is different. If the Tigers want him I believe they can get him. Here is where they will be able to outbid other teams and overpay him to a certain extent. Overpaying Victor Martinez also will not cost the team nearly as much as overpaying for Carl Crawford.
