The New York Mets will be looking to restock their roster with younger, cheaper talent going forward. One way they can achieve this is by trading some of their veterans such as third baseman David Wright.
Wright hasn’t had a good year this year but has put up very good numbers with the Mets in his first five-plus years of the career. Now he is owed $31 million over the next two seasons which isn’t an astronomical number for the Mets to retain or try to bait other teams with.
Even though Mets manager Terry Collins says he can’t imagine the Mets lineup without Wright or shortstop Jose Reyes however if GM Sandy Alderson wants to get the Mets going on the right track then he will part with guys like Wright and/or Reyes.
The question now remains is who can potentially give Alderson a call for Wright? Jason Churchill of ESPN names the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers. The Tigers make an interesting case considering the lack of production from Brandon Inge this year and the fact that Wilson Betemit is a free agent after the season. Tigers fans should be prepared to part with a top prospect however in order to get Wright. I’m thinking Nick Castellanos would for sure be in any deal involving Wright.
