It was a bad night all around for the Detroit Tigers who lost the 2 game series opener against the Kansas City Royals 10-2. It was an especially bad night for Tigers starter Brad Penny who only went 4 innings as he allowed 7 runs on 10 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1.

Many, including myself believe Brad Penny is on the bubble in terms of being included on the Tigers’ postseason roster. Tonight’s performance by Penny may have sealed his fate with Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

Eric Hosmer and Royals pitching prospect Luis Mendoza were phenomenal tonight. Eric Hosmer was 5-5 with a three-run home run while Mendoza, who was pitching in his first major league start went seven innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits.

With tonight’s loss to the Royals, the Texas Rangers are now only a half a game back for the second best record in the American League. Texas is in Oakland tonight to take on the A’s.

The Tigers will try to avoid the sweep tomorrow night when Max Scherzer tried to bounce back after a bad outing in Oakland.
