The Carlos Beltran era with the Mets is over before it began.

According to WFAN, Beltran — who was a member of the 2017 Astros team who revolutionized signs stealing in Major League Baseball — becomes the latest victim in the aforementioned sign-stealing scandal that has rocked the MLB.

WFAN:

Carlos Beltran is stepping down from the Mets before ever managing a game, according to multiple reports.

Beltran was named in MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s report on the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal this week. Beltran was a member of the 2017 World-Series team that illegally used a center field camera to steal signs and relay them to batters.

Beltran’s tenure with the Mets lasted just two months after the club hired him in November. Considered a bright mind with a strong managerial future, Beltran ends up not getting the chance to have that future in Queens.

Beltran though wasn’t just apart of the 2017 Astros which has become ground zero for the scandal, he was apparently a “key part” in the plan to steal the opposing team’s signs. During his playing days, Beltran was also known for his ability to pick up signs and tip pitches to the rest of his teammates in the dugout.

Upon his hire in New York, Beltran denied any wrongdoing in Houston stating, “We took a lot of pride studying pitchers [on] the computer. That is the only technology that I use and understand.” Two days later as shit started to get hot Beltran added, “I’m not concerned. There’s nothing illegal about studying your opposite team. We all have the same opportunity to look out for information and tendencies.”

Beltran now becomes the third manager in the MLB to lose their job over the sign-stealing scandal. Houston’s AJ Hinch and Boston’s Alex Cora both were let go from their respective teams while Astros general manager, Jeff Luhnow also got the pink slip as more firings around the League may follow.
