After yet another set back during Spring Training, Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya is attempting yet another comeback.
Zumaya, the flame throwing right-hander has had his career plagued by injuries ever since the end of the 2006 season in which he had the infamous wrist injury allegedly from playing guitar hero. Since then he’s dealt with shoulder problems, finger problems and most recently an elbow problem.
This season, Zumaya hasn’t pitched since February 27th when pain associated with last year’s elbow surgery shelved him. In July Zumaya had a screw removed from his elbow which was thought to be the source of his current problems.
Currently Zumaya is rehabbing in Lakeland, Florida trying to make his way back to Major League Baseball.
“He’s beginning a throwing program,” head trainer Kevin Rand said as the Tigers got ready Monday to open a three-game series against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. “He’s out to 90 feet.
“From the standpoint of throwing, he’s right on schedule for the kind of procedure he had.”
His future in baseball is obviously depended on his recovery which doctors believe is very much possible. However his future with the Tigers is unknown considering he is eligible for free agency come the end of the season.
