According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Red Wings recalled goaltender Joey MacDonald from Grand Rapids so starter Jimmy Howard can be with his new son.

James writes that Howard’s wife Rachel gave birth to the couples first child Sunday. Wings GM Ken Holland  said Howard’s wife “will be in the hospital for 48 hours,” and the Wings want Howard to be with her and baby Howard.

MacDonald and Ty Conklin will make the trip to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets Tuesday.

The Wings will not have to make any further roster adjustments since there is room for MacDonald on the teams 23 man roster given that defenseman Mike Commodore is still out with an injury.

With the Griffins so far this season, MacDonald has a 1.98 GAA and a .935 save percentage. He also has three wins and one shutout in five starts.
