The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman Brendan Smith from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

However Brendan Smith won’t see any game time with the Wings just yet.

Smith still has to serve a five game suspension handed down by the NHL for his preseason hit on Chicago’s Ben Smith. Brendan Smith will serve two games of the five game suspension (Thursday and Saturday) while Mike Commodore remains on the short-term injured reserve.

After this Smith will be sent back to Grand Rapids where he’ll make his season debut with the Griffins on Tuesday after his AHL suspension expires.

Once he (Smith) sits out Thursday and Saturday, he will only have one more game to serve for his NHL suspension.
