Whether it be Joel Zumaya, Carlos Guillen or the situation with Miguel Cabrera, Tigers manager Jim Leyland remains very positive on his players as the Tigers continue full squad workouts in Lakeland, Florida.

So who is Leyland high on now?

Well according to Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com, Jim Leyland was asked if staff ace Justin Verlander would reach the 20 win mark this season…

“Oh, yeah,” Leyland said, “(and) on a consistent basis.”

“He’s going to be a complete great pitcher for a long time because he’s a proud guy,” Leyland said.

The last pitcher to do this in the Tigers uniform was maybe the last true staff ace in Jack Morris. Morris completed this feet twice in Detroit going 20-13 in 1983 and 21-8 in 1986.

Verlander himself as been close to 20 games in the past by winning 19 games two years ago and 18 games twice.

With a reportedly better pick off move I have no doubt that Verlander can reach this feet at some point in his career. However with 5 man rotations and better hitters I don’t know if this is something that can be done on a consistent basis.
