After plenty of speculation, Tom Brady has officially announced his retirement from the NFL after 22 seasons in a lengthy Twitter statement.
Interestingly enough, Brady made no mention of the Patriots in his statement. Then again this particular moment should actually be about a guy who is the greatest player on-field player in NFL history and arguably the greatest player in professional sports. Shoutouts to Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft can come at any other time.
As far as Brady making the announcement official, it comes as no surprise. Aside from the reports last week that Brady would in fact retire after 22 seasons, his tone in interviews certainly suggested that.
But it’s not that Brady can’t compete next season as a 45-year-old QB in the NFL. He more than likely can and at a high level. At this point, though Brady was probably asking himself when’s enough, enough? He’s already accomplished everything you can accomplish as an NFL player short of a Hall of Fame induction which is obviously coming. Quite frankly it’s great Brady is doing this now, going out on his own terms instead of fans having to read headlines out of camp as to whether a 46 or 47-year-old Tom Brady is going to be some camp casualty with the Saints or Seahawks.
