Even though he has been pitching well for Toledo, the Tigers are in no hurry to bring reliever Ryan Perry back from Toledo. This is according to Chris Iott of Mlive.com.

Iott went on to say that Tigers manager Jim Leyland stressed patience for Ryan Perry who is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA, 10 strikeouts and one walk in 8 1/3 innings for the Mud Hens heading into their game tonight.

“He’s doing well,” Leyland said. “Sometimes out of necessity you get antsy and you probably end up bringing (relievers) back too soon. He needs to be down there pitching and getting himself in a better mental frame of mind, which I’m sure he’s on the way to doing.”

Perry, who hasn’t quite panned out as a Tiger, struggled so far this season. His ERA climbed from 3.00 to 12.19 over the course of a month (late April to late May).

Leyland believes it isn’t necessarily right to bring a reliever back up just because he is finding early success in the minors.

“That’s really not the purpose of sending him out,” he said. “The purpose of sending him out is to get him right so when he does come back he stays here where he belongs.

“He’s doing pretty good,” Leyland added. “But I don’t think a couple outings in Triple-A necessarily says, ‘OK, everything’s OK. That’s a cure-all.’ I think you’ve got to be careful about that.”
