Tigers manager Jim Leyland ended up finishing second in American League Manager of the Year voting behind Joe Madden of the Tampa Bay Rays who took home the honor.

Of the 28 writers voting, Jim Leyland received one first place vote. Joe Madden received 26 first place votes while Ron Washington of the Texas Rangers received the other first place vote. The Rangers manager (Washington) who took his team to a second straight World Series ended up finishing third in the voting.

Former Tigers star Kirk Gibson took home NL Manager of the Year honors. He earned 28 of 32 first-place votes and finished well ahead of Brewers manager Ron Roenicke.
