Pitching seems to be the top priority for the Tigers heading into the July 31st non-waiver deadline.
However could an upgrade at third base be the second highest priority for the Tigers?
According to a tweet by Fox Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi, whose been very much up on the rumors surrounding the Tigers, the team isn’t interested in Baltimore’s Mark Reynolds or Kansas City’s Wilson Betemit. This could however mean that the Tigers could be looking for a more consistent bat or a bigger name.
So, other options the Tigers may look at are Juan Uribe of the Dodgers and Aramis Ramirez of the Cubs. Now ESPN points out that Uribe may not be much of an upgrade, but Ramirez comes with such hefty price tag and a no-trade clause with a kicker that can guarantee his 2012 option at $16 million if he’s dealt.
If the Tigers want to look at even more options, they could look to acquiring a new short-stop and sliding Jhonny Peralta over to third base. If this is the case, the Tigers may look to add Rafael Furcal of the Dodgers.
I tend to favor the idea of getting a true third baseman to come in and play third place, leaving Jhonny Peralta at short. Peralta has had a tremendous season so far and switching his position could affect his offensive production.
