At this point, some Tigers fans are probably thinking, “Wait, we’re just now hiring a GM?” Yes, we’re just now hiring a GM, something Scott Harris said he would do during his introductory presser last year. In any sense though, this is fine, considering at this point it’s better to find the right guy than to rush a hire only to find yourself looking for a new GM in another couple of seasons and further setting back the Club.
Jeff Greenberg is coming over from the Chicago Blackhawks, yes those Chicago Blackhawks, who have been tabbed to head the front office of an organization that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2014.
As mentioned by Jeff Passan, though, this isn’t Greenberg’s first job in the MLB as Harris is very familiar with his new No. 2 having worked together in Chicago. Greenberg’s hiring is also very telling when it comes to the direction that Harris is looking to go with the Tigers. Outside the box, non-traditional, something fans should be welcoming… all things considered.
“I’m thrilled to add an executive of Jeff’s quality to our baseball operations leadership team,” Harris said in a press release this morning. “Throughout this search, it was important for me to find someone who can fit seamlessly into the culture we’re building here. I also wanted to bring in someone with a fresh perspective and new ideas that could challenge us on a daily basis and make us all better as we strive towards our goal of bringing postseason baseball back to Detroit. We’re excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Erin, and their sons, Leo and Sam to the Tigers family.”
