Here is the latest on the impending bidding war for Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes…

  • Cespedes is still not a free agent by Major League standards and it’s still cloudy as to when that will actually happen. The general feeling is that he should officially become a free agent by the later half of the Winter Meetings or afterwards. This is according to Ken Rosenthal.
  • Once Cespedes is officially a free agent, it’s expected that the Marlins, Yankees and Tigers will be the clubs with the highest interest. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic to see Cespedes first hand and to determine whether or not he (Cespedes) is actually 26 years of age.
  • So once that bidding war takes place, what will it take to sign to highly coveted outfielder? ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick believes that it may take in upwards of $50 million dollars in not more.
  • Executives right now are comparing Cespedes to Cameron Maybin which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. Cespedes has more power but less speed.
