The sports world was left in shock as Red Sox great David Ortiz was shot in the back Sunday night at a Santo Domingo night club in his native Dominican Republic.

The shooting left the 43-year-old in serious condition as the bullet went though his stomach according to Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the national police.

Ortiz underwent a lengthy surgery and remains in intensive care after having portions of his gall bladder, intestines and colon removed while further being treated for a bleeding liver. However despite his condition, he was apparently stable enough to be flown back to Boston to undergo more treatment in the United States.

As far as the suspect goes, witnesses apprehended the alleged shooter Féliz García as you can see from the video at the top of the page. But not before issuing a little Santo Domingo street justice before turning him over to the police.

Despite the severity of Ortiz’s injuries fortunately it sounds as though the future hall of famer is going to recover as the doctor who assisted in his surgery, Dr. Jose Abel Gonzalez says that he expects Ortiz to return to life the “same as before”.
