Hey there everyone welcome to the champ’s corner where I will keep you posted on things happening around the league and my thoughts. Now you may disagree with some of what I say, if so please debate me I love a challenge.
First off I want to talk about a particular player, one that had a stellar career in college, one whom most don’t seem to fond of, yes I’m talking about the first overall pick and Colts savior, Mr. Andrew Luck,
In this man’s debut he put up monstrous numbers, going 10-16 racking up a total of 188 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. In his very first play Luck threw a short three-yard touchdown to Donald Brown which turned out to be a nice read to check down his running back, a very veteran type move. For those of us who don’t know, on Payton Manning’s debut for the Colts he too, on his first pass attempt, caught Marvin Harrison on a post route for a touchdown, a very eerie comparable state these two now share. Andrew looked crisp and clean in all his deliveries, he was an unstoppable force and I can guarantee he felt on top of the world after that game and rightfully so. Now I know what all of you are thinking or even probably saying aloud to yourself as you read this, “ it was against the rams in the preseason”, I totally understand and I’ll admit it I didn’t buy into this Luck guy at first either, but after tonight my whole perspective of this man changed.
But it was against one of the roughest and toughest defenses in the NFL that Andrew Luck would be put to a true test, a test that many a quarterback has failed to overcome. Not to mention it was on the road in Pittsburgh
Second drive of the game after punting on the previous drive, Luck takes under center on a 3rd and 9, he hikes the ball, he tries to hit Reggie Wayne on a quick slant, but it gets picked off by Taylor for a touchdown, 14-0 Steelers lead. Now at this point faith in Luck was crushed and “superman” was revealed to be nothing more than a rookie quarterback. This is the perfect spot when a typical rookie QB begins to have doubts and loses faith. This is when we see more and more mistakes, but not on this night, not from Luck.
He takes under center for the third drive of the game for the Colts, after just throwing a pick and he leads the them 80 yards down the field in 10 plays, capping it off with a Brown rush for a touchdown. Luck came back very composed and you would had never of thought he had just thrown an interception. He had the look of a man who has been playing for at least 4 years.
But hold on, on the next drive he threw another pick which I thought sealed the Colts’ fate in this game. But once again Luck proved me wrong on the next drive. He took the Colts down the field once again, for 81 yards. This time though he capped that drive off by running it in himself for a 1 yd touchdown.
With the score tied Luck got the ball again and yes it was against the second team defense of the Steelers, but it was still impressive to see him march down the field and set Vinatieri up for a 53 yard field goal giving the Colts the lead going into the half.
Luck’s night ended coming out of the half against the Steelers and to some it may have been considered a bad outing for the rookie. But to me this shows that he has what it takes to make it in this league. He is very smart and great at reading defenses, he has a powerful arm and is extremely accurate and has the ability to run when he has to. He shows great composure when he makes mistakes and learns from them.
Without a doubt in my mind he will become one of the best quarter backs to ever play this game.
