Hockey is back! Well kind of.. Preseason hockey is back as the Wings took to the Consol Energy Center ice tonight to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the preseason opener.

Unfortunately for the Wings they ended up falling short tonight 3-2 as Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin first game action since tore his ACL back on February 5th of last season. Malkin came up big for the Pens tonight adding a goal and an assist while Chris Kunitz and Matt Niskanen added tally’s as well.

Niklas Kronwall and Jiri Hudler scored for the Red Wings while Pavel Datsyuk who was wearing the #24 in honor of his fallen friend Ruslan Salei who was killed in the tragic KHL Lokomotiv plane crash on September 7th.

Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas Lidstrom did not play for the Wings tonight.
