The Boston Red Sox have officially parted ways with embattled manager Bobby Valentine.

The move doesn’t come as much of a surprise after the team lost a total of 93 games in 2012 which is the most for the franchise since 1965.

Valentine, who was in his first season with the Red Sox, told Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News that he understood the decision after a very frustrating season.

“I understand this decision. This year in Boston has been an incredible experience for me, but I am as disappointed in the results as are ownership and the great fans of Red Sox Nation. … It was a privilege to be part of the 100 year anniversary of Fenway Park and an honor to be in uniform with such great players and coaches. My best to the organization. I’m sure next year will be a turnaround year.”

This really didn’t seem like a good fit from the start as the eccentric Valentine was called upon to fix a clubhouse that was already in shambles before he arrived.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com first reported Wednesday that the Red Sox were set to fire Valentine after the season finale.
