A week ago, Erie, PA running back Greg Garmon had the University of Michigan on his short list after what appeared to be an enjoyable visit to Ann Arbor back in June.
However on Thursday, the 6-1, 195-pounder said that Illinois was now his top choice along with North Carolina and Iowa.
“Illinois is in my top three, along with North Carolina and Iowa,” Garmon said. “There could be some changes to that list, but right now those are the three that really stick out.”
This comes despite Michigan’s highly regarded 2012 recruiting class in which Garmon says he will not commit to a program based off the quality of the incoming freshman.
“I don’t think the stars next to a player’s name really matter,” Garmon said. “Really, it just matters how you play when you get there and who wants it more, because there are going to be a lot of four to five star players that go to a school and never play. Stars just don’t matter.”
According to Kyle Warber of Mlive.com, Garmon will not make a verbal commitment anytime soon and maintains that he will make his decision at the end of the high school football season.
Now for Michigan fans hoping that Garmon brings Michigan back into the picture there good still be some hope yet. Garmon himself admitted that Michigan has sort of an x-factor going for it after the tremendous support that he’s received from Michigan fans via the social networking realm like Facebook.
“When I get on Facebook and I see the Michigan fan base pulling for me, it’s impressive.”
Besides the speculation on where he will play college football, Greg Garmon’s story is truly inspirational. While playing football for his middle school at the age of 14 he was told he had cancer after experiencing pain in his leg. Garmon was able to fight through it and in May of 2007 he was cancer free and ready to begin his high school football career.
