Jason Beck has an article up on MLB.com where he talks about pending Tiger free agent Magglio Ordonez’s desire to return to the team next season.
According to Beck, even though he has been away from the team due to an ankle injury in which he suffered just after all star break he keeps in touch with teammates such as Miguel Cabrera who says Ordonez would indeed like to return to the Tigers next season, even if he hits the free agent market.
“I’ve talked to him,” Cabrera said. “He said he feels better. He wants so bad to play, but his injury, he feels bad. He wants to come back next year here. He wants to stay here.”
“And I want him to be back,” Cabrera added. “[He’s an] excellent hitter, great player, great teammate.”
The Tigers clearly have a lot decisions to make this offseason, especially ever since Ordonez went down with the ankle injury thus ending his chances to put his $15 million dollar option into place for next season. The Tigers now have until the days following the end of the World Series to decide whether or not they will pick up his option or send him to the free agent market.
I definitely don’t expect the Tigers to pick up that option but wouldn’t be surprised if they do in face bring him back next season. It would be nice to bring him back on a one year contract worth about $6-8 million.
