Dave Curtis of the SportingNews reports that Ohio State will vacate its 2010 Big Ten and Sugar Bowl championships and all other games from last season as a self-imposed NCAA sanction. This was in response to the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations.
Furthermore Ohio State will serve two-years of self-imposed probation and outlines increased compliance efforts and staffing.
Curtis points out that what’s surprising about these self-imposed punishments is what’s missing. OSU didn’t implement scholarship losses or a postseason ban. Ohio State stated that the more severe penalties weren’t included in their sanctions was because they felt former head coach Jim Tressel was the only one who knew of the violations.
This doesn’t mean however that they won’t end up losing scholarships or have a postseason ban.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions will consider these sanctions when they meet with Ohio State officials on August 12th. During these meetings the NCAA could impose further penalties on Ohio State since they could very well be considered a repeat offender.
Again this all stems from Ohio State players selling memorabilia to tattoo parlor owners for free tattoos and Jim Tressel not disclosing this information to Ohio State and NCAA officials.
