Last night the Georgia Bulldogs ended a 41-year National Championship drought when they defeated SEC rivals Alabama 33-18 securing their first title since 1980.
It was a game that left a lot to be desired if you were anyone but an Alabama or Georga fan. Frankly, the vast majority of the game was an utter snooze fest as both teams traded field goals heading into halftime. And sure fans were left with a much more exciting second half, however, looking at the big picture that was the entirety of the College Football Playoff fans and players alike need more and deserve more.
Are we going to get it though? Probably not, at least not anytime soon because just prior to last night’s National Championship CFP Board Managers failed to come to an agreement on a 12 team expansion.
If the College Football Playoff does expand, it does not appear as if it will happen anytime soon. The CFP Board of Managers failed Monday to approve a proposal for an expanded 12-team playoff field with Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby saying after the group’s scheduled meeting that the managers “didn’t even get close” to coming to an agreement.
While the CFP Management Committee (conference commissioners) did make a recommendation Monday to the managers (school presidents) on how to move forward with a 12-team expansion, the committee’s proposal was not unanimous, and the managers failed to form a consensus as a means of moving forward.
The hope from some officials was that an expanded playoff could begin as soon as the 2024 season. Instead, it appears more likely the playoff will not expand until its current 12-year television contract with ESPN ends ahead of the 2026 season.

Essentially what we’re going to get is what we always get with college football, kicking the can down the road in hopes other circumstances arise or another lucrative situation presents itself. Of course, this is all despite a college football playoff and the idea of some kind of December Madness being fucking amazing, not just for fans but the monetary bloodsuckers who are in full control of the sport.
I think we need to face it as fans, the FBS format is stale for the very most part. The BCS sucked and they remedied it with something completely half-ass. It’s also apparent that an expanded playoff isn’t a direct solution to injecting more parity into the game, something like that could still take time. But if you offer up more chances to more schools who are on the cusp of the current playoff format then maybe you could see more of a competitive balance as players choose schools outside the SEC who they think could also make an appearance in an expanded playoff.
