MSU junior defensive tackle Jerel Worthy along with seven other Spartans have been named to various award watch lists recognized by the National College Football Awards Association this week. This is according to Greg Johnson of the Grand Rapids Press.
Worthy, who could very well be a top ten pick when he declares himself eligible for the NFL Draft, was named to three different watch lists for the week. These lists include the Outland Trophy for best interior lineman, the Bronko Nargurski Award for best defensive player and the Chuck Bednarik Award for top college defensive lineman.
QB Kirk Cousins and RB Edwin Baker were named to the Maxwell Award lists which recognizes college football’s best player.
Here are the other nominees Johnson mentioned…
Senior guard Joel Foreman joined Worthy on the Outland Trophy list for best interior lineman.
Wide receiver B.J. Cunningham, a senior, made the Biletnikoff Award list for best wide receiver.
Junior placekicker Dan Conroy, who was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award (best kicker) last year, is on that watch list as expected.
Senior tight end Brian Linthicum is on the John Mackey Award watch list, which was announced in the same week Mackey died (Wednesday). Mackey, who revolutionized tight end play in the NFL, championed insurance care for former players even as he battled dementia. He was 69.
The seven awards watch lists will begin to be released on Monday and should include even more Spartans from the 10-2, Big Ten Championship team of last season.
