It seems as though pro officials have it out for Detroit this past summer. First we had Armando Galarraga being denied a perfect game on a blown call, the Lions losing the regular season opening due to a misinterpreted rule and tonight the Tigers once again have a bad call go the other way in a 11-4 loosing effort to the Texas Rangers.
Sure in this instance the bad call that happened tonight will fall by the waste side because the Rangers ended up winning the game pretty decisively and second the Tigers are way out of any playoff contention.
So what happened tonight? During the bottom of the fourth, David Murphy of the Rangers appeared to hit a lead off home run off Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman. Once the ball went into the seats it was ruled a home run then disputed by manager Jim Leyland saying the ball was clearly on the foul side of the right field foul pole. Crew chief Jerry Layne who was working at first base and made the initial home run call opted to have the play reviewed at the commissioners office in New York (which can only happen on home runs). The verdict eventually did come back and it was ruled a home run making the score then 4-2 Tigers.
Now the problem with all of this is replays showed the ball clearly on the foul side of the right field foul pole yet the home run was still upheld. This will certainly bring out more conspiracy theorists who will insist that professional sports officials are out to get the city of Detroit which simply isn’t true. It seems as though this is just another one of those coincidences.
