Michigan surprised their players and the country today when they emerged from the Spartan Stadium tunnel wearing road legacy uniforms, similar to the ones that they wore against Notre Dame earlier in the season.

“Our players really enjoyed the uniforms from the night game with Notre Dame so we decided to surprise them and the country with a new-look design for the Michigan State game,” said head coach Brady Hoke. “This is such a great in-state rivalry that we decided to honor the former players that played in this game.”

These were kept a total secret by the University as the Wolverines came out during warm ups Saturday wearing the usual road white uniforms.

The road legacy jerseys were designed by Adidas and pay tribute to the different eras of Michigan football. The jerseys have the players numbers on the front and back with the iconic block M on the upper left chest. Like the legacy jerseys there’s repeating stripping on the shoulders with the shirts underneath the jerseys featuring the word “victors” on the left bicep and “valiant” on the right bicep.

According to MGoBlue.com, the white pants worn are a tribute to the 1974-75 seasons when the team wore both white jerseys and white pants on the road. Michigan’s athletic site also highlights the team wearing two-tone socks with blue on top and white on the bottom.

Again appearing this week are the players numbers on the famous winged Michigan helmets. These first appeared this season during the Notre Dame game under the lights at the Big House. Head coach Brady Hoke said these helmets would remain for the rest of the season. These were first worn by the team back in the late 1960s.
