According to reports, Warde Manuel and the University of Michigan is on the verge of re-signing head coach Jim Harbaugh to a contract extension through 2026.
You seriously can’t make this shit up.
Even if Harbaugh enjoyed moderate success during his time in Ann Arbor, going 2-4 this past season while failing to record a home win for the first time ever was probably reason enough to either let Harbaugh go into a lame-duck season without a new contract (which we all knew he wouldn’t do) or mutually agree to go your separate ways.
However, after doing what he did in 2020 combined with having zero wins over Ohio State or having yet to reach a Big Ten title game in six total seasons with the team, it shouldn’t be a difficult decision to come to that it’s time for a change.
Yet, Manuel seems to be falling into a fanboy mentality where you settle for a stale head coach based on the excuse that “who else out there is better?”
Harbaugh made more than $8 million dollars this past season and continues to be one of the highest-paid head coaches in college football — you could pretty much get anyone else within the scene and probably do either just as good if not better and save yourself some money.
Hell, you could do what Michigan State did with Mel Tucker. Poach some head coach at a moderate level power five team enjoying some relative success, see what they could do with some additional resources at their disposal, and go to work.
But no. As Ohio State just destroyed Clemson — arguably the best team in college football during the Rose Bowl and are a win away from the National Title, Michigan is stuck in neutral with a highly suspect transmission.
