With a 4-12 season in the books, Lions GM Martin Mayhew has opened up on various topics regarding the Detroit Lions.
His future with the team
This past Monday according to Anwar Richardson of Mive.com, Martin Mayhew had a sit down with the Ford family where they voiced their displeasure over the disappointing results of the season. However the Fords also informed Mayhew that they have no intentions of removing him as their general manager heading into 2013.
“As far as I know, we’re (Jim Schwartz and Mayhew) going to be back,” Mayhew said. “I’ve spoken with Mr. Ford, I’ve spoken with Bill, and we talked about our plans going forward. We’re certainly working on getting things right.”
Restructuring the contract of Matthew Stafford
Despite not his best season in 2012, Matthew Stafford looks to be the guy for Mayhew going forward. With that said Mayhew may look to extend the contract of Stafford all while working to make it more cap friendly. This means knocking it below it’s $20 million plus charge according to ProFootballTalk.com.
The biggest mistake in 2012? Counting on the return of Jahvid Best…
Out of all the mistakes that were made heading into 2012, counting on the return of running back Jahvid Best may have been the biggest for Martin Mayhew (Mlive.com):
“It’s no knock on him, he did everything he could to get back,” Mayhew said. “Based on the information we were getting, medically, I felt very comfortable that he was coming back. We didn’t have a real plan to replace him. All the information that we had, acting in real time, was that he would be back.
“Really, in the history of the NFL, and I’ve asked people, I can’t think of a single time that a player with a head injury, who was asymptomatic, who wanted to play, wasn’t allowed to play. I think he was the first one ever.”
Mayhew doesn’t intend to make the same mistake in 2013.
“I’m not inclined at all to think it’s going to work out,” he said. “I’m not at all inclined to rely on his return at this point. If that happens, it will be great, but I’m not at all inclined to rely on that.”
