Marquette escaped another extremely close game Saturday night beating Butler 74-72 to move onto the Sweet 16.

In a tightly contested game that built a future rivalry in the new Big East next season, Butler had it’s chances to eliminate the Golden Eagles who barely got by Davidson in the second round.

After a series that saw Rotnei Clarke throw up an air ball and two successful free throw attempts from Davante Gardner, the Bulldogs had once last shot when Marquette was called for a goal tend and botched an inbound attempt.

Butler center Andrew Smith however threw up another poor three point attempt that sent Brad Stevens and the Bulldogs home and Marquette onto the next round to face either Miami (FL) or Illinois.
