Ever since the Lions rid themselves of former GM Matt Millen, they’ve been doing their best to also rid themselves of all weak connections to that horrible time in Lions history.
However they may bring on board a connection back to Millen in a way the team hasn’t seen before.
According to Tim Twentyman of the Detroit News, the Lions will try out Collin Mooney, a West Point graduate and son-in-law former Lions GM Matt Millen.
Aside from that very troubling connection, Mooney is West Point’s all-time single-season rushing leader with 1,339 yards in 2008 and considered a power back something the Lions continue to search for after losing Mikel Leshoure for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles.
“I’ve been waiting for two years now to get that call,” Mooney said. “I’m very excited about it and I’m very appreciative that they’re giving me the opportunity. I just want to get in there and play a football game and see if I can make the team. If it doesn’t work out with Detroit, hopefully this is a jumping point.”
Mooney says he’s talked to his father-in-law plenty of times and has even gotten plenty of advice from him as well.
“He’s given me plenty of advice,” Mooney said of Millen. “He was in the league for 13 years and he knows the business. He’s got a lot of great advice he’s given me. He told me what I needed to do going into camp and the way to give myself the best opportunity to stick around. He’s helped me out a lot.”
I’m not going to get into that last quote too much. Hopefully Mooney knows that whatever advice he gets from Millen he picks and chooses which to follow.
Mooney graduated from West Point back in 2009 and has already served his 2 years of mandatory military service.
