After a deal last week that sent Kyle Van Noy to the Patriots, Lions GM Bob Quinn was at it again today prior to the NFL‘s 4 PM trade deadline.
According to multiple reports, the team has acquired cornerback Jonthan Banks from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 2018 seventh round pick.
The Lions are hoping to tap in on perhaps some yet to be seen potential in Banks who is a former second round pick back in 2013. This comes after undergoing a reduced role this season with the Bucs, playing in only five games in 2016 and being told as late as yesterday that he was going to be released.
Those plans obviously changed and the Bucs were able to score a seventh round draft pick from the Lions.
Regardless, it’s a seventh round pick and I’ve already seen people on Twitter bitching about giving up a pick for a guy who was going to be released anyway. That argument doesn’t have much merit behind it considering
- It’s a seventh round pick so who really cares?
- The Lions won’t have to complete with anyone else to acquire Banks who could have something left in the tank.
Oh yeah, it’s also worth mentioning Banks was Darius Slay‘s teammate back at Mississippi State so there’s also that.
