According to ProFootballTalk.com, the Lions have re-signed their former 2008 third-round draft pick Kevin Smith.

Smith was the team’s primary running back during his first two seasons rushing for 976 yards as a rookie and 747 yards in 2009. His role with the team was reduced when the team drafted Jahvid Best in 2010 and he wasn’t offered a contract at the end of the 2010 season when he became an unrestricted free agent.

Speculation arose concerning Smith when the Lions hosted a bunch of free agent players during their bye week. In addition to Smith, the Lions also reportedly looked at former Lion RB Aaron Brown.

Aside from the signing of Smith, the Lions also signed former Pro Bowl guard Leonard Davis to a contract.

The Smith signing adds depth to a Lions running back core that has suffered tremendous injury this season. It also brings question to whether or not Jahvid Best will be back this season after suffering a concussion a few weeks back against San Francisco.
